The iPhone – Causing a Mobile Revolution
The iPhone is the hottest selling product to hit the cell phone industry in years. It has sold like hot cakes, it seems to be everywhere and, if you listen to some people, it is all singing and all dancing – and can do your washing up too. Maybe.
What is certain is that it is a very powerful, very versatile bit of equipment. The sheer number of tasks and roles that it is able to perform marks it as one of the most important things to hit the technology markets in years.
And this success has changed the nature of the game in the mobile phone industry. At once the bar was raised and companies were challenged to come up with competition, to show that the iPhone was not the only game on the street.
This has caused a revolution in how we use our cell phones. ‘Smartphones’ have gone from nowhere to being everywhere almost overnight. And because of the iPhone they all include such things as
Applications – software that allows us to use our phones in a variety of different ways
Video – being able to see quality video has become far more important
Real Internet. No more WAP. If a phone expects to compete it needs real web access
Emailing – all phones need to be able t connect to email servers these days, or be useless for business people
Music – was already a staple before but now people need easy access to download and buy songs, much like the Apple iStore
And there is so much more besides. What the iPhone has done was to take an industry that was developing fairly quickly and put it into hyperdrive. Now companies need to be continuing to develop technology just to keep up, never mind to dominate a market.
The iPhone has created a revolution, long may it continue.
